LA’s Escalade-ing Car Problem

reckless driving laws

In the continuing saga of illegal car club takeovers in Los Angeles, yet another recently took place outside a West Covina mall. Unlike previous takeovers that have blocked street intersections and crowded parking lots, this latest one ended in violence.

The takeover was orchestrated as a tribute to the late Paul Walker. For those unaware, Paul Walker was one of the stars from The Fast and the Furious movie franchise. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 40 as the result of a car crash. The takeover in questions took place on the late actor’s birthday.

The takeover began in the Plaza West Covina Mall at 11 PM. Footage found on social media shows participants attacking two mall security officers and vandalizing a mall security vehicle. Both officers have been reported to be okay, while the vehicle received thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

West Covina Police issued dozens of citations and towed around 50 vehicles, however no arrests have been made as of yet. The officers are looking into the video footage found on social media sites to try and find those responsible for the damage. The police are asking for any information about the event or people in question be shared by calling 626-939-8688.

It is important to remember that assemblies like these are often illegal, and just being an observer can get a person in trouble. Drivers at such events can face reckless driving charges or even assault with a deadly weapon if they hurt someone with their vehicle.

Drink Responsibly on Halloween

halloween dui checkpoints

Summer came and went and we are now headed into fall. This means that Halloween is almost here! For kids, this means trick-or-treating to get as much candy as they can possibly carry. For adults, it means going out to parties to have a good time. If there is alcohol at these parties, than a person needs to drink responsibly.

Around most holidays where drinking is involved, people are bound to see an increase in DUI checkpoints around town. This is due to the fact that officers know that people will be drinking more and therefore they will put more effort into keeping those who have consumed alcohol off of the road.

A similar thing happens around holidays such as Memorial Day and Labor. However, it is infinitely more important on Halloween. On this particular holiday, kids are out roaming the dark streets in search of candy. In this instance, a drunk driver is far more likely to hit a child, or group of kids. That is something that no one wants to deal with.

DUI checkpoints may seem intimidating, but they are nothing to worry about. A driver just needs to wait for an officer to wave them forward, answer a few quick questions, and so long as the officer doesn’t suspect that the driver has been drinking, they will be cleared to proceed on to their destination.

If you are planning on going out and drinking for Halloween, be sure to do so responsibly. This means having a designated driver, or using some sort of rideshare service such as a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. Doing this will not only keep you safe from getting a ticket or in an accident, it will also help keep trick-or-treaters safe as well.

Should You Stop After Hitting an Animal?

running over animal on road

As people drive, they are prone to encounter all sorts of things as they steer their vehicle down the road. Just about every driver has watched with horror as a creature decides to cross the road at the very last minute. As this happens, there is often a moment of panic in the driver, since there is not much they can do other than hope the critter made it across in time.

Most drivers hope that they never end up hitting an animal, but unfortunately, it is bound to happen at some point. The more time a person spends behind the wheel of a vehicle, the more likely they are to hit an animal.

Even then it is still pretty rare for a driver to hit an animal, at least rare enough that most people don’t know what to do if they do hit one. Some people just keep driving, doing their best not to look back at what they left in the road. Others are a little more caring, especially when there’s a possibility that they hit someone’s pet. Still, these people don’t know what they should do in this kind of situation. This article is meant to help change that.

What Type of Animal?

When it comes to animals, they can be classified as either domesticated or wild. What a driver is required to do after hitting an animal with their car is dependent on what type of animal in question. Was the animal something that could be considered a pet, such as a cat, dog, horse, or even cow? If so, the driver has to act differently than they would if they had hit a squirrel or skunk.

If the animal is was a wild animal, creatures such as skunks, raccoons, and deer, then the driver should pull over. This is especially true for larger animals such as deer and elk. Not only does the driver need to report the incident to the proper authorities, such as highway patrol or animal control, the collision could have done some serious damage to the vehicle or even the driver. This would make it unsafe to drive.

Not only does calling the authorities alert them to a dangerous road condition, it can lead to a police report being filed. While this may not sound like a good thing, it actually is. The police aren’t going to arrest an individual for hitting a wild animal. They will simply file a report, which will give the driver documented proof of the accident. This can then be used to file an insurance claim if need be.

Domesticated Animals: Household Pets

A domesticated animal is any animal that a person might normally own. This includes the obvious cat and dog, but also the less obvious creatures, such as most farm animals. Basically, if the animal might have an owner it is domesticated and the driver will need to stop and deal with the situation.

Hitting an animal, especially one that might be someone’s pet, can be a very disturbing experience. However, regardless of how the driver may feel, they need to immediately pull over and alert the proper authorities. This can be either the local police or sheriffs. This holds true no matter where the animal was hit, whether on a public road or a private parking lot.

Once the driver has stopped and alerted the proper authorities, they need to wait at the scene until help arrives. It is recommended that the driver keep a safe distance from the animal, since it will likely be scared and in pain. This can cause it to lash out at anyone who goes near it. However, if the driver feels that they need to move the animal in order to ensure its safety, they should do so with caution by wearing gloves or using a blanket to touch the animal and carefully move it to safety.

The driver should not panic or worry about being held liable for hurting the animal. Most cities have ordinances that require pet owners to keep their animals under control. This means the critter cannot be free roaming, especially in the street. If that were the case, the pet owner will likely be the one to get into trouble for the accident, not the driver. The only times the driver would be liable is if their own negligence led to the accident, or they assumed possession of the animal by moving it into their car. Once they have done that, the driver is now responsible for making sure the animal is taken care of. This is another reason why it is best to wait until the authorities arrive before doing anything.

Another important mention is the fact that in the state of California, failing to immediately stop and deal with the scene of an automobile accident can result in hit and run charges. In California, this is applicable anytime someone else’s property is damaged, including someone’s pet or livestock.

Do the Right Thing

Hitting an animal in the road is not something any driver wants to do, but is something that is bound to happen at some point. The best way to avoid this sort of thing is by being vigilant, but even then, that will not always work. Sometimes an animal will just decide to dart out in front of the vehicle.

If a crash with an animal is inevitable, it is important for a driver not to swerve. In doing so, the driver could swerve into another vehicle or send their vehicle careening off the road. The best thing to do is for the driver to remain in control of the vehicle as best as they can. This means no sudden jerks to the side or slamming of the brakes. Also try honking the horn or flashing headlights in an attempt to scare the animal into moving.

If the unfortunate hit occurs, the driver should do the right thing and take responsibility for the accident. That means pulling over and alerting the proper authorities.

carpool lane rules

Did You Know This about Carpool Lanes?

carpool lane rules

If you have ever driven on a California freeway, you’ve probably seen a carpool lane before. More recently, they have been renamed to HOV lanes, which stands for High Occupancy Vehicle Lane. These are lanes that are only accessible by vehicles that have more than one occupant in the vehicle. The idea is that by offering a clear lane for only certain vehicles, more people will be encouraged to ride share and therefore reduce the amount of traffic on the road.

While carpool lanes may parallel and resemble other lanes on the road, they are viewed as different. They have different sets of rules to ensure that they are used properly and effectively. Breaking these rules can get a person pulled over and issued a traffic violation ticket.

One rule that some people do not realize, is that not all carpool lanes are active 24/7. Some lanes are only considered carpool lanes at set times for certain days of the week. These times usually coincide with peak traffic conditions and are often posted on the signs near the lane itself. This means that anyone can drive through the lane when it isn’t during the posted time, but during those times, only vehicles with more than one occupant can use the lane.

When a driver violates the rules of carpool line, they can face a minimum fine of $490 dollars. Repeat offenders will likely face higher fines. Depending on the location, there can also be additional fees if the local city has elected add additional fees in an effort to reduce carpool lane abuse.

Nobody likes dealing with traffic and California seems to have more than its fair share. This isn’t surprising considering that California is the most populated state in the country. However, this is not an excuse to misuse the carpool lane. If a driver wants to be able to use the carpool lane on their way to and from work, then they should find someone to ride share with. Otherwise they could faces some hefty fines.

Rules of the Beach

california beach rules

Nobody wants to think about rules once summer rolls around, the season is about freedom after all. However, the rules still need to be followed. If someone decides to ignore them, they can end up facing some serious fines or even jail time. California law doesn’t care what season it is. If a law is broken, a person will get into trouble.

Beaches are the go to place to hang out in the summer when you live in California. Unfortunately, beaches are also the go to spot for tourist as well. Locals often find their favorite surf spots littered with tourist and trash. This can make for a bad relationship between locals and tourists. If you’re a local, try to be patient with the tourist this summer. They may not know that they’re on a private beach, or that it’s a popular surf spot. If you’re a tourist on the beach this summer, please remember to pick up after yourself. California already has enough problems with water population, we don’t need an extra hand.

Aside from littering, beaches have several other rules as well. You can’t just do whatever you’d like on a beach. Most beaches have set aside areas that are designated for certain activities that are banned elsewhere on the beach. It’s always a good idea to see what rules that a beach might have since they change from place to place. For example according to the LA County website, all beaches in LA County have the following rules:

  • No animals allowed on the beach (no cats, dogs, horses, etc.)
  • No alcoholic beverages
  • No smoking
  • No tents, or overnight camping
  • No fires or barbeques allowed, except in the fire pits at Dockweiler Beach
  • No fireworks
  • No glass containers
  • No loitering between midnight and 6am
  • No amplified music
  • No nudity
  • No diving in shallow water
  • No soliciting or selling merchandise
  • No littering
  • No driving or parking on sand or bike path
  • No disturbances
  • No swimming, wading, surfing, skin dive, scuba dive, or recreation in the ocean after sundown

Like most rules, these rules are designed with your safety in mind. They don’t want glass bottle on the beach because people tend to litter, and broken glass could easily slice someone’s foot open. Loud music may be okay with you and your group of friends when it’s your playlist, but your neighbors on the beach may be offended by your choice of songs.

Rules exist for a reason. Although you may not always agree with that reason, the rule needs to be followed in order for you have the best beach experience. Don’t let the rules get you down. You can always look for beaches that have designated areas for you to have a fire, or a place that allows pets. There are several beaches in California, you just have to find the right one for you.

Road Trip 101 – How to Prepare

things to remember for a road trip

Summer is for lazy pool days, family vacations, and road trips! If you’re like the 80% of Americans who ventured out on a road trip in 2017 then you know that road trips can be a lot of fun. However, they can also be a little nerve-wracking if you’ve never taken one before. That’s why we’re here to give you a few “rules of the road” for your summer trips. Read below for a list of our top 5 tips for road trips.

Have a “check-up” completed – It sounds unnecessary but we can’t express how important it is to take your car to a trusted mechanic and have them complete a total body inspection of your car. They will inspect all the hoses, tires, brakes, windshield wipers, and top off your fluids. The initial price of the inspection is only about $50 but can fluctuate depending on if the shop finds any problems. It’s a hassle and just adds to the never-ending list of things you need to do before you embark on your journey, but the peace of mind as you drive is well worth it.

Submit travel plans to your bank – Can you imagine stopping to grab a bite to eat after a long day of driving and having your debit or credit card declined? Before you leave your home state, be sure to log onto your mobile banking app and submit your travel plans. This alerts your bank that any abnormal purchases in strange states are actually you and not a random credit card thief taking a joyride.

Keep snacks at a minimum – If you’re like the rest of us then you get excited at the thought of all the snacks you can consume on your trip. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the $50 you just spent on snacks at Walmart wasn’t really worth it. Now, it is a good idea to get a few healthy options, maybe some pretzels or peanuts to munch on when you get tired, but don’t go crazy – it might just leave you feeling bloated and sluggish from the lack of activity and influx of snacks.

Pack a case of water – We suggest taking the extra money you allotted for snacks and putting it toward a case of water. We know that some people prefer a reusable water bottle, but you never know if the truck stop is going to have a water fountain to fill up your reusable water bottle. So rather than spending $4 for 2 bottles of water at each pit stop, pack a case of water from the start and you don’t have to worry about it.

Create a music playlist on your phone – In the age of Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora do people really create playlists anymore? Maybe not, but when you are in the middle of the desert, no matter what carrier your phone has, you’re going to lose reception and there aren’t going to be any radio stations. You’re going to be thankful you were prepared and have something to listen to.

Road trips are a great way to see the country, and they are a great bonding activity for your family. We are by no means experts in the field, but based on our experience we think these five tips and tricks will help make your trips much more enjoyable!

The Disappointing Reality of Shootings

The Disappointing Reality of Shootings

There are several universal laws that everyone should know, and typically follow. The problem with universal codes is that we assume everyone will follow those codes as well. Unfortunately, bad people do bad things. People break universal laws all the time, which is why we have services to help prevent this. If a law is broken there are consequences for the person who broke it. This leaves the rest of us shocked, confused, saddened, and sometimes mad.

With advances in technology we hear and find out about these shootings faster. This is good, but also bad. With the ability to find out more information instantly, we also tend to get told the wrong information. Facts get twisted and false information quickly gets shared across the country.

It is terrifying that you have to be prepared for these kinds of situation. Schools are starting to practice active shooter drills. Unfortunately, school drills aren’t practiced nearly enough, or taken seriously. School shootings are a real threat, and, quite sadly, are becoming more common. Here are some recommend steps of action to take if you ever find yourself in a shooting:

  • Run away whenever possible
  • Know your escape routes if in a building
  • Think and react immediately
  • Don’t worry about your belongings
  • Grab a weapon if possible for self defense
  • Hide yourself if you can’t escape
  • Call 911, if possible
  • Barricade your hide out/lock any doors
  • Turn off your lights
  • Turn off anything that makes noise (cellphones, etc.)
  • Play dead

Engaging the shooter is not advised because you don’t know the motive, or reasoning they may or may not have. If you’re even in this kind of situation you’ll have to rely on your judgment and readiness. To help prevent a situation like this from occurring there are also several steps you can take:

  • Report suspicious activity
  • Beware of your surrounding
  • Know your location’s lockdown procedures
  • Take classes for self defense

An active shooter scenario is something no one wants to be a part of, but we all need to be prepared. The increase in shootings, and the massive number of causalities should encourage you to take steps to be prepared. The best thing you can do is educate yourself, and beware. Do your own research and learn how to be prepared.

A New Freeway in Southern California

A New Freeway in Southern California?

A New Freeway in Southern California

Southern California is known for its sprawling freeways. These giant roads crisscross all over the region, creating an intricate spider-web of asphalt and concrete. Unfortunately, many of them are bogged down by large amounts of traffic, which makes driving across them long and difficult. In order to help alleviate some of that traffic, Los Angeles County officials are looking to build a new freeway.

This new stretch of 63 miles of roadway would connect the cities of Palmdale and Lancaster to Victorville and Adelanto. This would be the first freeway to be built in LA County in 25 years. The last one to be built was the 105 freeway, which turned many people off of the idea of building more freeways.

The construction of the 105 freeway was a bit of a disaster. The construction cost around $2.2 billion, which was well above its estimated price, and makes it the most expensive road ever built in the United States. The project displaced around 25,000 people, flat out violated environmental laws, and generates tons of noise and pollution daily. Needless to say, there are many people out there who are not thrilled at the idea of another freeway being built.

However, anyone who has recently tried to get between Palmdale and Victorville knows that the route is becoming increasingly more congested, even after projects that were meant to alleviate said congestion. Having an alternative route would make this drive much easier for many commuters.

What are your thoughts on a new freeway in Southern California? Will it help alleviate traffic and congestion, or will it cause too much harm to the environment?

What Happens When You Post Bad Things on Social Media

Another day, another story about someone posting incriminating content on social media.

A few weeks ago, two Massachusetts teenage girls put an 8 month old baby, whom they were babysitting, in a refrigerator, closed the door, and laughed. The girls recorded their actions and posted the video on Snapchat, a popular social media app that allows users to share images and video instantly with friends and the community where it lives for 24 hours before it disappears automatically. In the video, the baby could be heard screaming from behind the closed refrigerator doors.

The police got wind of the incident, viewed the footage, and subsequently arrested the two minors. The girls are now charged with child endangerment, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. After appearing in juvenile court, they were released back to their parents.

Social media is not a place to post content like this. Not only is it disturbing for others to look at, but it also displays the illegal actions people are taking. It shows other lives being put in danger while incriminating those who are behind the crimes. Disturbing content like this is flagged and taken down by the social media company as soon as they possibly can. However, within a few minutes, something on social media can go viral, especially something as disturbing as this.

The teenage girls are minors and prosecutors decided not to try them as adults in court. So, the girls stood in juvenile court and were then released to their parents’ custody. If it was an adult who was being tried in court, they would not be released back to their parents’ custody after one court hearing.

The Dangers of Hot Water and Online Stunts

Once again, another shocking trend is making its way across the internet and it has very serious results. The Hot Water Challenge, as it has been dubbed, involves pouring boiling water on an unsuspecting person. It is very dangerous and has led to the death of an eight year old. This is a reminder for parents that they need to warn their children about replicating dangerous stunts they see online.

As most adults know, boiling water is extremely hot, and should never be touched. After all, water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. When our skin is exposed to temperatures like that, we receive second-degree burns. This is a type of burn that partially penetrates through the skin and into some of the underlying tissues. These kinds of burns can take roughly 2 to 3 weeks to heal, if not longer.

No one should ever come into contact with boiling water. Throwing it onto an unsuspecting victim is dangerous, and can be considered a criminal act. In one Hot Water Challenge incident, a 12 year old girl is being charged with felony assault for pouring boiling water on a “friend” at a sleepover. The victim of this attack, an 11 year old girl, suffered second-degree burns to her face, neck, shoulders, and chest.

In another instance, an 8 year old died months after being dared to drink boiling water through a straw. The event left her with severe burns in her throat and mouth. The girl received a tracheotomy, which is when an incision is made in the trachea to create a direct airway, and struggled to breathe for the next few months leading to her death.

It should be obvious to most people that they shouldn’t touch anything that is incredibly hot, let alone throw it at someone else. However, parents are better off being safe and having a conversation with their children about the dangers of touching hot surfaces. Be sure that they understand that replicating stunts they see online is incredibly dangerous.

Stunts preformed online are, hopefully but not always, performed by trained professionals. The performer has researched and practiced the stunt multiple times to ensure that everything goes perfectly and that he or she will be safe. These kinds of stunts should never be performed by someone with no experience or understanding, especially not children.
