What to Do If Your Child Is Being Bullied

preventing bullying

As a parent, one of the most heartbreaking things that can happen to your child is for them to come home from school one day and tell you that they are being bullied. At first you might feel angry, “How could someone pick on, tease, or taunt my child? Their parents should have taught them better. I am going to call the school right now and get their number so I can give them a piece of my mind.”

As unfortunate as it may be, bullying is somewhat common now days. According to a study completed by the U.S. Department of Education on 2015, 22% of students ages 12-18 were bullied during the 2012-2013 school year. A staggering 20% if high school students also reported being bullied on school grounds in the past 12 months.

The study also revealed that boys are more likely to be physically bullied, while girls are more likely to be verbally bullied, face exclusion, and experience cyber-bullying. The silver-lining of the study found that even though bullying is most common in elementary school, the likelihood that your child will be bullied decreases throughout middle and high school.

Now that you have some statistics about bullying, you’re probably thinking back to the original scenario. What are you, as a parent, supposed to do if your child is one of the 22% of students that experience bullying? It can be hard to know what to say, but the most important thing to do is make sure they know you are there for them. You should not ignore the situation, but rather sit down and discuss what is going on with them. They need to know that their voice is being heard, someone cares about them, and that they are not alone.

Your parental instincts might tell you to have the child fight back or stand up for themselves, but that’s not always the best choice. Rather, take a stance against the bully together by letting them know you want to help and that you will get through the situation together. No matter the age, being bullied is never fun and can be painful to deal with. No matter what, make sure your child knows they are not alone and you will with fight it together.

why we celebrate labor day

Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

why we celebrate labor day

Many people view Labor Day as one of the final summer barbecue holidays. It provides a relaxing three day weekend for everyone and lets people have a lot of fun. Unfortunately, this all means that the reason behind the actual holiday is often left forgotten. In fact, not many people could even tell you why Labor Day is celebrated.

Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September and is meant to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of the American workforce. The holiday became a federally recognized holiday in 1894 as a result of several deadly strikes and rights protesting poor work conditions.

In the late 1800’s work conditions were pretty poor in America. People had to work 12 hour days, 7 days a week just to scrap together just enough money to survive for another week. Workers at this time faced unsafe conditions, few breaks, and poor sanitary conditions.

Eventually, workers became fed up with these conditions, and strikes became prominent across the country. Soon, these strikes became deadly which helped draw awareness to the cause. The first unofficial Labor Day parade occurred on September 5, 1882 when 10,000 New York workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square.

As time progressed, the idea of a workman’s holiday became popular, and many cities and state began to enact laws recognizing the holiday for the first Monday in September. However, the holiday wouldn’t be recognized by the federal government for another 12 years. After several bad strikes in 1894, Congress passed an act to make Labor Day a nationally recognized holiday.

As you can see, Labor Day is about more than just relaxing with a three day weekend. It is about celebrating all of the hard work you and other workers across the country do every single day of the year.

Things that Actually Make You Happy

Things that Actually Make You Happy

Unfortunately life doesn’t come with manual or guide. In life we often get dragged down by the mundane. Routines become our way of life, and leave little time for having fun. The challenge many of us face is how to be happy. This simple question plagues many people’s minds on a day to day basis.

Endorphins, oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine are all chemicals that contribute to your happiness. When we feel good, it’s usually because our brains have released one of those chemicals. These chemicals, also referred to as hormones, can be released for many different reasons. Exercising, stretching, laughing, and smiling can all help activate the release of these hormones.

When you exercise, your body releases oxytocin and endorphins. These hormones increase your happiness. Even through exercising may seem like a daunting task at first, it can actually improve your mood. The best part about exercising to feel happier is that the more of a regular routine you have, the more hormones will be released.

Laughing is an excellent source of happiness, but you’re probably thinking that you can’t control when you laugh. However you would be wrong. Studies have shown that if you fake laugh for over a minute, you will actually start laughing naturally. Yes, faking it till you make it works. Fake laughing relaxes your body, and releases just enough dopamine to trigger a real response. Also when you make a fool of yourself, you can begin to naturally laugh about it.

Smiling is similar to laughing when it comes to making you happy. If you force yourself to fake a smile for a certain amount of time, you’ll eventually trick your brain into releasing the happy chemicals. Fake smiling is more effective if you can see yourself smiling in the mirror.

Another great way to improve your happiness is dancing. Taking a moment of your day to let go, and dance around like a fool, can help relax your body. A relaxed body is more likely to release the hormones that improve your happiness and overall mood.

When you break down what makes you happy, there can be many factors. However there are scientific explanations for why you are feeling like you do. There may be physical factors, as well as mental ones. Just know that if you’re searching for a way to improve your happiness, trying these simple gestures can help you out.

Catfishing and Dating Apps

Catfishing and Dating Apps

Catfishing and Dating Apps

As time goes on, dating apps and online dating are becoming increasingly more popular. While this has helped many people find the love of their life, it has also led to quite a bit of pain for some people. Unfortunately, not everyone online is who they say they are. This fact can lead to a lot of heartbreak when a person pretends to be someone else on a dating website.

Most people know of this kind of thing as catfishing. This is when a person pretends to be someone else on social media sites. Typically, the intent of doing such a thing is to either better meet implied social criteria, such as being a certain weight, or to scam people into giving money away.

When a person pretends to be someone they are not, and enters into an online relationship with a person, they can cause some serious emotional damage. To them, the relationship is not real, but to the person they are catfishing, the relationship is very real. When the victim inevitably discovers the truth of the matter, they can be devastated.

A person who falls victim to something like this can suffer:

  • Emotional damage
  • Potential loss of money
  • Psychological damage
  • Public embarrassment

None of this is fun, which is why people who use online dating sites or apps should be aware of the signs of being catfished. A person should always check the other person’s profile page, and see how much information is actually there. Is there a lot of information about the person? Are there linked social media accounts? Check the linked accounts. Fake accounts typically don’t have a lot of friends, nor do they have a lot of activity on them.

Lastly, the person should consider the interactions they have had with the other person. If the suspected catfisher has been inconsistent, or avoids meeting with the person, then there is a pretty good chance of them not being honest.

Online dating can be a great way for a person to meet “the one”, however people should be cautious. Not everyone is who they say they are online.

How-Helpful-Are-Reviews

How Helpful Are Reviews

How-Helpful-Are-Reviews

In today’s modern age, we are able to research anything thanks to the internet. We can even research a company before we give them our business. This have given consumers a better way to learn about a company, and hopefully prevent them from being scammed by said company.

However, even with all of this knowledge of reviews, there are still some people out there that do not think reviews play that big of a roll in business. These people would be wrong. Reviews are very important to businesses. A large percentage of people like to look up the reviews of different businesses before deciding which one to use. Just think how many times you have used reviews to determine where to have lunch in a new city.

Often times, the problem with reviews, is that most people do not take the time to leave one unless they feel they were wronged in some way. This leads to a surplus of negative reviews out there for some companies. Even one bad review can have large consequences for a company. It can be hard to recover from, especially since good reviews are hard to get.

This has led to a surplus of negative reviews out there, which causes many people to choose the company with the least amount of negative reviews.

While these bad reviews can be very bad for most companies, some have learned to turn it into an advantage. There are actually many companies out there that will put negative reviews on their competitors. This lowers their competitor’s scores, and makes it harder for them to get clients, which in turn makes things easier for the bad company.

Reviews are very important to companies, and that is why the good ones try so hard to take care of their clients. If you have found a company that you like, and you want it to continue to do well, leave a positive review for it online. Doing so will help other people find the same kind of amazing help that you found, which will help the business stay around.

Working-a-Shorter-Work-Week

Working a Shorter Work Week

Working-a-Shorter-Work-Week

Just about every adult out there is currently enjoying the fun of the average five day work week. You can pretty much guarantee that no matter what day of the week it is, all of the employees are waiting for the weekend. This is because the weekend is when we all get to be in control of our lives, not our employers.

The weekend allows everyone to catch their breaths and relax after a long and tiring work week. Most people would argue that the weekend is not long enough. That they do not feel like they have had enough of a chance to recuperate. Many people are excited to learn, that this may be true.

There have been numerous studies over the years by researchers and companies alike. One thing that seems to be consistent, is that when the work week is shortened to 4 days, productivity actually goes up.

By reducing the work week by just one day, many researchers and companies have found that employee happiness goes up, and so does work productivity. A shorter work week actually helps employees stay healthy, by preventing them from getting too stressed. This also helps employees be more focused and motivated at work, which in turn allows them get their jobs done sooner. Companies who adopted a shorter work week also found that employees were less likely to call in sick.

It can sound a little weird, reduce the amount of time working, and work productivity goes up, but it appears to be true. Most people would assume the opposite. Perhaps this has something to do with keeping employees happy. By keeping employees happy, they are more willing to work efficiently. This is definitely something that many employees would recommend their bosses look further into, because who wouldn’t enjoy a shorter work week?

More-Commonly-Misused-Words

More Commonly Misused Words

More-Commonly-Misused-Words

There are many words within the English that confuse even native speakers. Some of the words have just been misused for so long, that it is hard to remember their proper usage. Others are so similar to other words, that it can be hard for people to know which one they want at a given time.

Here is a brief sample of commonly misused words:

  • A lot vs. alot: This is one that can be seen a lot, and the difference is pretty easy to understand. A lot means either a plot of land, or a large group of something. Alot is not actually a word.
  • Factoid: Many people assume that a factoid is a small bit of information, but that is wrong. A factoid is actually false information that is presented as fact.
  • Its vs. it’s: Its is used to show possession, meaning that whatever it is, it owns the following object. It’s is a contraction between it and is, or it and has.
  • Literally: this one gets misused quite frequently. When something literally happens, it means that something actually happened in the real world. A person’s head cannot literally explode, nor can they literally die of embarrassment.
  • Lose vs. loose: When you do not win a game, you lose a game. When something is not tight, it is loose.
  • Than vs. then: Than is used for comparisons, such as you like this more than that. Then is used for time, such as first we will do this, then that.
  • To vs. two vs. too: You use to when you give something to someone. Two is the number 2. Too, means there is too much stuff, or that someone else will be coming along too.
  • Your vs. you’re: Your shows possession of something. When you own something, it is yours. You’re, is a contraction of you and are.

The English language has thousands of words within it, so it is only natural that some of the words get messed up from time to time. However, if a person wants to write or speak accurately, they need to have a good understanding of each word they are using, otherwise they can send the wrong message.

Getting-Arrested-in-a-Foreign-Country

Getting Arrested in a Foreign Country

Getting-Arrested-in-a-Foreign-Country

No one ever wants to get arrested. Doing so means being placed into a small concrete cell with iron bars, possibly with other inmates. A person loses their freedom when arrested, and it is not fun at all. However, something most people do not consider, is what happens if they are arrested outside of the United States.

Here in the US, the Constitution grants all US citizens certain rights. These rights may not be granted in other countries. Some of these rights include:

  • Innocent until proven guilty
  • Having a speedy trial
  • Having a trial with a jury of your peers
  • Safety from cruel and unusual punishment

Here in the US, we are very lucky to have these rights. Not every country offers these rights to its citizens, let alone visitors from other countries.

When a US citizen is arrested while abroad, they are subject to that country’s laws. They will face whatever kind of trial that country offers. They will need to serve their sentence in one of that country’s jails as well. A US citizen abroad cannot rely on the US Constitution to protect them.

A US citizen who has been arrested abroad does have the right to request that the local US embassy or consulate be notified of their arrest. A consular officer will be sent to visit with the arrested person and provide them with some assistance. This right is thanks to the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

This is why it is extremely important for a person to familiarize themselves with the laws of the country they are visiting. Things that may be legal here in the US, may be illegal in some foreign countries. No one wants to get arrested, especially when they are outside the US.
