California Liquor Laws You May Not Know

Liquor Laws: Californians Don’t Realize How Great They’ve Got It Here

California Liquor Laws You May Not Know

If you have been born and raised in California, and you’re 21 years of age, you know that getting ahold of alcohol is fairly simple. You don’t have to worry about what time it is, or what day it is. You can even get it at your local grocery store. These are little things about California Liquor laws that we take for granted.

The rest of the states don’t have the same laws as California, especially when it comes to alcohol sales. States like Oklahoma have stricter sales of liquor. There, you can’t buy liquor from a grocery store or on Sundays. Beer that is sold at grocery stores has a lower percentage of alcohol. Liquor stores can sell beer, but it can’t be sold cold. Lastly, all liquor stores must close by 9 p.m. every day. The only exception to this is Sundays because all liquor stores must be closed that day. Oklahoma isn’t the only state with strict liquor laws like this.

States like Texas, Kentucky, and a majority of the southern states still have dry counties, meaning that in certain counties it is illegal to sell or buy liquor. This may be shocking to some to find out that there are still limits on alcohol, but it shouldn’t be. Most states still allow counties or districts to decide whether or not they want to allow the sale of alcohol. Only a few states, like Arizona, and Hawaii, do not allow local districts or counties to decide on alcohol laws.

California tends be very free from restrictions when it comes to alcohol sales. According to the California’s Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) there are a few laws that we need to be aware of.

Minors, under the age of 21, cannot be bartenders. Being under 21 limits what you can do in a lot of areas, but especially when it comes to drinking. Even through being a bartender doesn’t require you to drink alcohol, you’re classified as too young to recognize drunken behaviors. A bartender is responsible for everyone that they serve alcohol to, including the patrons in the restaurant that you don’t directly serve mixed drinks to. Even though the server is delivering the drinks to restaurant patrons, the bartender is ultimately responsible for them.

Selling alcohol to a minor or a known alcoholic is illegal. Selling alcohol to a minor can land you in serious trouble. That is why it is always wise to check for proper identification. Not only is it illegal to sell to minors, for obvious reasons, it’s also illegal to sell to drunks. If a person is heavily intoxicated and is trying to buy alcohol, no one should sell him any. If anything, vendor should take the intoxicated person’s keys away and/or call the police. The same goes for alcoholics in California.

The reason why California has so many laws in regards to alcohol is to keep the general populace safe. Without laws in place, public intoxication, drunk driving accidents, and many other unfavorable things would increase in popularity. With leniency comes responsibility. So drink responsibly and be glad you can find your favorite six pack of beer on a Sunday night.

What Legalizing the Sale of Marijuana Means

What Legalizing the Sale of Marijuana Means

What Legalizing the Sale of Marijuana Means

This new year brought Californians the ability to sell marijuana. This also allows folks the opportunity to purchase marijuana for recreational use. You may be under the impression that this means you can smoke whenever and wherever you want. However that’s not the case.

It’s important to remember that though it is legal in California to smoke recreationally, and medically, it is still not legal nationally. That means you can still get into trouble federally and that on government property, marijuana is still very illegal.

Another area where Californians have to be cautious is when it comes to driving. Along with the legalization of sales of marijuana, another bill passed making driving while high illegal. If you’re driving with marijuana in your car, you must have it stored in a container in your trunk according to the LA Times.

As soon as the clock hit midnight on New Year’s Eve, people began lining up to buy marijuana. However, dispensaries may face issues with their revenue. Most banks are nationally accredited and insured. Since marijuana is illegal at the federal level, banks cannot supply services to marijuana dispensaries. This leads to many dispensaries requiring cash-only transactions.

With marijuana sales and recreational use being such a new concept for this state, it will be interesting to see what other laws will be developed. The sale of marijuana means a fun time to some, but to others it’s a bit more complicated.

8-Commonly-Misused-Words

8-Commonly-Misused-Words

The English language has thousands and thousands of words within it. This is why it can take native English speakers years to even come close to mastering it. Due to this fact, there are several words within this language of ours that are misused on a daily basis. Some words have been misused for so long, that the wrong meaning has now become their actual meaning.

    1. Bemused: Many people think that a bemused person is someone who is amused, when it in fact means that the person is confused.
    2. Compelled: When a person is compelled to do something, many would assume the person simply feels like they should do that thing. However, it really means that the person is being forced to do something.
    3. Enormity: Some people, including past presidents, think that enormity means something really big, but it does not. It really means a great or extreme evil.
    4. Ironic: This is one that many people mess up. They think that something is ironic when it is a funny coincidence, but when something is truly ironic, it is something that was the opposite of what the person expected.
    5. Literally: This word gets misused all of the time. Often times, when it’s used, people are better off using figuratively. When something literally happens, it means that something actually happened as it was stated.
    6. Nauseous: This means to cause nausea, so when a person says they feel nauseous, they are actually saying that they fell like they cause other people to be sick. What they mean to say is that they feel nauseated.
    7. Peruse: Many people think that this means to skim over something, but it actually means to thoroughly look through and review.
    8. Redundant: If something is redundant, many people think that this means the thing is repetitive, which is wrong. If something is redundant, it is something that is unnecessary and can be removed.

For some of these words, it can be easy to see how the wrong use came about. Take redundant, for instance, some things that are repetitive could also be considered redundant. Luckily, for everyone’s egos, most people are not alone in making these kinds of mistakes with the English language.

Don’t Take the Scare Too Far

Halloween is just around the corner, and it is the time of year where many people love to get scared. A good scare between friends can be terrifying, and yet thrilling and exciting. While scaring people is fun, there are many people out there that only enjoy it when they are somewhat expecting.

You never want to scare someone so much that they truly think their life is in danger in some way. That is why it is best to stick to scaring people that you know will take it in a good way, such as friends and family members. Scaring random people can actually lead to a person being arrested.

If you scare a person to the point where he or she thinks their life has been threatened, they can call the cops, and you could be arrested. A person can be arrested for assault and battery, even if they never intended to cause any actual harm.

Take for instance the creepy clowns that were popping up all over in 2016. Dozens of people were arrested for dressing as scary clowns and startling innocent people in some way. It may have just been a joke to some of the clowns, but the threat and scare to their victims was real. This lead to real consequences for the people who dressed as clowns.

So, remember to keep the scaring and pranks to family and friends this year. They will be less likely to call the police on you, even if you do start to annoy them.

DUI Checkpoints on Halloween

call-apple-valley-bailbonds

Drinking and driving is never a good idea. Unfortunately, thousands of people decide to do so every day, especially around holidays. This includes Halloween. People are out and about partying and having fun when they decide they are not too drunk to drive. They get behind the wheel of a vehicle, and inevitably cause an accident.

This is horrible on any day of the year, but can be infinitely worse on Halloween due to the increase in foot traffic caused by children trick or treating. This is why police officers are so determined to stop drunk drivers on Halloween. One of the best ways that they do this is by setting up DUI checkpoints.

DUI checkpoints help law enforcement officers find drivers who are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

This is done by setting up the checkpoint on a road that is known to be well traveled by people who have been drinking. The officers will restrict the flow of traffic down to a few lanes, and quickly interview every driver they passes through. They will ask each driver a few questions, and look closely for any signs of intoxication.

If the driver doesn’t show any signs of inebriation, then they will be free to go on their way. However, if the officer suspects that the driver is under the influence of something, the driver will be asked to pullover to the side. The driver will then have to take a field sobriety test, and if they fail that, they can be taken into custody.

While this may slow down traffic, it is all for a good reason. On Halloween, kids are all over the streets as the go on their annual hunt for candy. No one wants to hear a story about a drunk driver killing someone on a normal day. On Halloween, the story could be much worse.

Halloween and DUI Checkpoints

Halloween is a time for fun and games. For kids, this means trick or treating. For adults, this means parties, which will typically involve alcohol. The police and other local law enforcement are aware of this fact. They know people will be drinking during Halloween, and some of those people will think that getting behind the wheel of a vehicle is a good idea.

Drinking and driving is a bad enough idea on any day of the year, but it is especially dangerous on Halloween. This is due to the fact that there will be hundreds of kids roaming the streets trick or treating. This can increase the odds of someone getting hurt due to drunk driving.

In order to prevent as many accidents as possible from happening, local police will be setting up DUI checkpoints. They may seem like a nuisance, but they are there to keep people safe.

At a typical DUI checkpoint, the road will be restricted, and officers will be stopping vehicles to speak with the drivers. In most instances, the officer will simply ask for the driver’s name, and where the driver is coming from and going to. As long as the officer does not see any obvious signs of intoxication, the driver will be allowed to go on his way.

However, if the officer suspects that the driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the driver will be asked to pull over to the side of the road. There, another officer will have the driver conduct a field sobriety test. If the driver fails this, than he or she will be taken into custody.

Drunk drivers cause hundreds of injuries, and roughly 36 deaths a day. Those numbers tend to grow around drinking holidays, which is why officers setup DUI Checkpoints. These checkpoints help keep the roadways safe for everyone out there. So, if you plan on going out and having something to drink this Halloween, be sure to do so responsibly. Assign a designated driver, or get a taxi, Lyft, or Uber. Doing this will help make sure everyone gets home safely.
